European Human Rights Moot Court Competition
Welcome to the official website of the Human Rights Moot Court Competition organised by ELSA in cooperation with the Council of Europe.
Results of the Written Submissions will be announced on this website and via email after the 13th of January
After the expiration of the application deadline, first edition of the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition has 120 teams in the written rounds!
In order to provide law students with an opportunity to gain practical experience in the field, ELSA organises a Europe-wide moot court competi tion on the European Convention on Human Rights in coopera tion with the Council of Europe. The competition simulates the procedure of complaints to the European Court of Human Rights: The teams will examine a fic tive case and draft written submissions for each party. The teams will be evaluated based on their written admissions and the best 16 teams will compete in the European Final at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
The European Human Rights Moot Court Competition works as a unique contribution to university curricula in helping students understand the principles and implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights. Furthermore, through the com petition students gain practical experience that can only be pa ralleled by pleading a real case in the European Court of Human Rights itself.
ELSA has long-standing experience in organising moot court com petitions on national and international level. An example worth noting is the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law (EMC2) which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Through the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition ELSA wishes to extend the tradition of mooting and to answer to the need for an English language moot court competition on Hu man Rights voiced by students across Europe.
The prize for the winner team of the competition "the Council of Europe Prize" is a traineeship at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg for a period of one month.
